Trans activist and drag performer Peppermint says anti-LGBTQ bills, including a recently passed Tennessee ban on drag performances in public spaces, are being designed without any consideration for or input from LGBTQ people and their lived experiences. Listening to the LGBTQ community is crucial now, given that most Americans statistically do not personally know a transgender person, Peppermint said. "We are who we say we are," she said. "Trans women are women, trans men are men. If we can deal from a place of empathy, that may be a good place to start."

"Tennessee is set to ban some drag performances as well as gender-affirming health care for transgender minors, after state House lawmakers sent both bills to Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s desk for final approval on Thursday.

Tennessee’s Senate Bill 3, introduced in November by state Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R), seeks to amend an existing state law preventing “adult-oriented businesses” from operating within 1,000 feet of schools, public parks or places of worship to include “adult cabaret performances,” which the legislation defines as performances that feature “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest.”

Shows with topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers and strippers may also be classified as adult cabaret performances under the proposed law."

Actor, drag performer, and activist RuPaul posted a video on Instagram on March 8 blasting conservative lawmakers who are currently pushing anti-drag and other anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation in their states.

In the video, RuPaul refers to those politicians as ‘stunt queens’ who want to distract Americans ‘from the real issues that they were voted into office to focus on: jobs, health care, keeping our children safe from harm at their own school.’

‘But we know that bullies are incompetent at solving real issues. They look for easy targets so they can give the impression of being effective,’ the 62-year-old continued. ‘They think our love, our light, our laughter, and our joy are signs of weakness. But they’re wrong because that is our strength. Drag queens are the Marines of the queer movement.’

RuPaul ended the video by urging people to remember their political power, saying ‘a social media post has never been as powerful as a registered vote.’

The post, which has 2.2M views as of March 9, comes just days after Tennessee’s Republican governor signed a bill severely restricting drag performances in public spaces and in the vicinity of children.

According to the New York Times, more than 150 bills targeting the trans and greater LGBTQIA+ community were introduced this year by GOP lawmakers in at least 25 states.
